Abrasive Blasting

The Right Media for Your Toughest Cleaning Challenges
Removing rust from a steel tank, stripping decades of paint from historic brick or cleaning burnt residue from an RTO in an ethanol facility all call for different media, sizes and delivery methods. Figuring out the right combination for your project is exactly what Premium Plant Services is here for. Whether you know exactly what you need or want a little guidance, we’ll work with you to make sure you get the right results on everything from industrial equipment to historic restorations.
Check out our blasting solutions guide for a closer look at different media and techniques.
How We Select the Right Abrasive Method
Every project at Premium starts with a conversation. Before we recommend a media type or even pick up a blast nozzle, we take the time to understand your specific situation–because the right solution isn’t the same for every job. Many people assume one media type fits all applications, but the reality is more nuanced.
We walk through a few key questions with every client: What are we removing–coatings, rust, buildup, or paint? What is the substrate–stainless steel, generic steel, concrete, brick, or something else? What’s the end goal–simply cleaning, or preparing the surface for recoating? If recoating, what type of coating will be applied, and what surface profile does it require? And finally, does the environment call for dust suppression?
Once we’ve selected the right media for the job, we also determine the correct size of that media based on the desired finish and coating requirements. These two decisions–media type and media size–work together to ensure the outcome meets your exact needs. Getting both right requires expertise, experience, and a deep understanding of how abrasive blasting works in different scenarios.
Abrasive Blasting Media Types
Premium’s experts work with a broad range of abrasive media. The right choice depends not only on what’s being removed and the substrate beneath it, but also on the environment around the work–whether we’re in a food facility, near vegetation or waterways, or in a space where containment and dust control matter. By the end of that conversation, there’s no guesswork–just the right media, the right size, and a clear plan for your specific application. Already know what you need?
Sand
- Best For | Rust Removal · Coating Removal · Surface Prep
- Works On | Steel · Concrete · Masonry
Sand blasting is one of the most widely recognized blasting methods–but not always the right one. Because of respirable silica concerns, Premium’s experts often recommend alternative media depending on the environment, containment requirements, and project conditions.
Slag (Coal Slag/Copper Slag)
- Best For | Heavy Rust Removal · Coating Removal · Surface Profiling
- Works On | Structural Steel · Tanks · Industrial Equipment
A byproduct of metal smelting, slag abrasives are low silica, moisture-free, and available in a range of grit sizes. This is a fast-cutting and cost-effective medium for demanding industrial applications where aggressive coating removal and surface preparation are required.
Garnet
- Best For | Surface Prep · Fine Profiling · Recoat Prep
- Works On | Steel · Pipelines · Industrial Equipment
Hard, dense, and recyclable, garnet produces a consistent surface profile and is often used where precise preparation is required before recoating or lining applications.
Crushed Glass
- Best For | Rust Removal · Coating Removal · Surface Profiling · Environmentally Sensitive Applications
- Works On | Steel · Masonry · Concrete
A recycled glass abrasive that cuts effectively while containing very low free silica, crushed glass is a strong alternative to sand or slag where environmental considerations or waste reduction are priorities.
Glass Beads
- Best For | Polishing · Light Cleaning · Smooth Finish Applications
- Works On | Metal Components · Precision Parts · Delicate Surfaces
Spherical rather than angular, glass beads clean and polish surfaces while producing a smooth, bright finish without aggressively cutting into the substrate.
Walnut Shells & Corn Cobs
- Best For | Gentle Cleaning · Paint Removal · Delicate Surface Restoration
- Works On | Wood · Aluminum · Fiberglass · Historic Surfaces
Walnut shells and corn cobs are organic, biodegradable, and low-impact abrasives that remove coatings and surface contaminants while protecting sensitive substrates.
Baking Soda
- Best For | Paint Removal · Gentle Cleaning · Degreasing · Deodorizing
- Works On | Delicate Metals · Food Processing Equipment · Engines · Fire-Damaged Surfaces
Food-grade safe, water-soluble, and non-sparking, baking soda blasting is often used in food and beverage facilities and fire restoration applications, where it effectively removes soot, char, and odor without damaging already compromised surfaces or leaving secondary contamination behind.
Specialty Media
Premium also works with a range of specialty abrasive media, including aluminum oxide, white aluminum oxide, steel grit, steel shot, silicon carbide, and plastic abrasives. These compositions are used for high-performance surface preparation, shot peening, precision cleaning, and specialized coating applications. Our experts determine when a specialty media is right based on the substrate, coating system, and required surface finish.

Not Sure Abrasive Blasting Is the Right Answer?
Some applications call for a different approach entirely. If your project involves food facilities, areas with vegetation, sensitive substrates, or situations where media waste or disposal cost is a concern, our experts may recommend an alternative.
